The purpose of this Wiki is to share literacy strategies with teachers in my building. Reading scores on OAT and reading assessments indicate that our students' ability to comprehend and apply what they know in regards to reading is lacking. The goal is to share strategies for pre-reading, during reading, and post-reading. These strategies are applicable across grade levels and content areas. Each page includes graphic of the strategy, information on the strategy, how to apply it to class, and online resources that coordinate with the strategy. Currently there are 6 strategies online. The goal is to have a strategy to share with staff a week. This will allow me to share as many strategies as I can share in a more effective manner as a coach. It also provides an online database for sharing information with other coaches in other buildings through the district.
My inquiry project lead me to learn more about micoblogging and the history of the new literacies. This is so I can talk to teachers who may be doubtful of how learning has changed for our students and how new media is affecting learning. I now have information to create a presentation to share with them and some video resources that will illustrate what the new literacies are about. I also was able to locate some resources offering suggestions on how to encourage teachers to try new literacies. I focused on Twitter due to its short and timely communication feature. I will attempt to use Facebook this fall to connect with teachers and students in a literacy manner and encourage them to use Twitter in the classroom though the 20+ links I found.
My goal is that by the end of the year I will have shared a literacy strategy a week with all teachers in my building and some in other buildings in the district. I hope to have encouraged some growth to use new literacies in a more creative manner, such as Twitter. Even if teachers are not able to directly use Twitter in the classroom due to cell phone or computer reasons, I am hoping to find a way to make micro-blogging part of my goals this year.
